Falcon Northwest Mach V (Intel Core i7-3770K)

Falcon Northwest, the maker of heavy-duty (and just plain heavy) gaming desktops for the serious user, is taking a big gamble with the latest version of its super-powered Mach V (Intel Core i7-3770K). Unlike most gaming machines, which are outfitted with Intel's highest-end processors, this one bears the company's top mainstream CPU. It's a well-performing chip, no doubt, even when, as here, it's not overclocked. But when you're paying upwards of $5,000 for a computer, do you want "well performing" or do you want the best? Despite other superior hardware, this Mach V falls just short of competing with other desktops we've seen in recent months, making this strong choice not quite ideal for the gamer who wants the most, the strongest, and the fastest PC available.

Design
With this Mach V, like the last one we looked at back in January, Falcon Northwest has ripped a page from competitor Maingear?s playbook. This system uses the Icon2 case, which is nearly identical in overall style to what you see with the Maingear Shift, thanks to a motherboard that has been rotated 90 degrees clockwise. This lets the vents for the video cards aim out the top panel of the case rather than the back, which takes better advantage of heat?s natural tendency to rise. This change doesn't have many day-to-day usability ramifications for the average user, but it sets the system apart even among unique, enthusiast-oriented system designs.

The rest of the Mach V's interior is similarly laid out to minimize heat and maximize airflow and convenience. The hefty 1,200-watt power supply is sequestered in its own bottom chamber, and a thin metal plate placed just to the right of the expansion slots keeps the video cards' heat isolated and provides a direct path for the air from the intake fans to be drawn upward and out of the case via a separate exhaust fan. Six vertically mounted 3.5-inch drive bays are right in the path of that air, and easy to access thanks to their removable trays. With the exception of the expansion slots, which require a Phillips screwdriver to work with, the entire inside of the Mach V has tool-free construction?you even access it by opening the two side panels with switches rather than thumbscrews.

In most other ways, the Mach V screams standard gaming desktop tower, with a black brushed-aluminum finish, a front-panel door, and on it even a logo for the company that glows when the machine is powered on. Once the case is fully closed?you'll also need a screwdriver to remove the top panel?it's almost impossible to tell how it differs from any other gaming desktop.

Features
As you?d expect from a gaming computer, this Mach V packs some potent hardware. Its CPU is Intel?s top-of-the-line third-generation Core (aka ?Ivy Bridge?) model, the Core i7-3770K, at its stock clock speed of 3.5GHz; if you want to overclock it, you?ll have to do that yourself. (At least Falcon Northwest has equipped it with a closed-loop liquid cooling system, should you choose to go that route.) A comfortable 8GB of memory is on hand as well. (You can install as much as 32GB, although getting there requires replacing the two 4GB DIMMs and filling the two other available slots.) Both those elements are nice, but it?s possible to improve upon them. The graphics, on the other hand, not so much: Two Nvidia GeForce GTX 690 cards are about as good a video package as you can get, and? guarantee that you'll get spectacular frame rates with the highest detail settings at any resolution you want to play.

On the storage front, a 256GB solid-state drive (SSD) is an ultra-speedy home for the Windows 7 Professional operating system (an unusual choice?Home Premium or Ultimate, which combines the Home Premium and Professional Features, would be much more common) and a fair number of the games you'll want to install, and a 3TB drive gives you lots of additional space for storing files as well. In case you still deal with discs, a Blu-ray combo drive gives you lots of flexibility in terms of what you burn and what you watch.

Connectivity is hardly a problem, with two USB 3.0 ports joining headphone and microphone jacks on the front panel, and the Asus P8Z77-V motherboard offering four USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, DisplayPort, HDDMI, DVI, VGA, Ethernet, and eight-channel audio ports on the rear panel. (You'll also find three DVI ports and one Mini DisplayPort jack on the back of each video card.)

Like every other gaming PC worth its salt, this Mach V arrives at your door entirely free of annoying bloatware. But it does have some additional expansion space: Four 3.5-inch and two 5.25-inch drive bays are still available, and one PCI Express (PCIe) x1 slot, a third PCIe x16 slot, and one standard PCI slot free for adding more cards.

The Mach V is covered by a three-year parts-and-labor warranty, which includes one year of overnight service.

Performance
Falcon Northwest Mach V Icon2Given its hardware, you naturally don?t have to worry too much about this Mach V?s performance from any perspective. With productivity times like 53 seconds (for Handbrake) and 2 minutes 21 seconds for our Photoshop CS5 test and 1,920-by-1,200, high-detail frame rates of 84.4 frames per second (fps) in Crysis and 202fps in Lost Planet 2, there?s never any serious question that it won?t be able to handle whatever you throw at it.

But is it the absolute best you can find given its price? With the exception of its top-ranking Futuremark 3DMark 11 score of 10,523, no. The latest versions of both the Maingear Shift Super Stock and the Origin Genesis alternated beating it out on both performance and gaming tests for one reason: They?re equipped with more powerful?and overclocked?Intel Core i7-3930K Sandy Bridge?Extreme CPUs. It?s tough to do too much better in terms of graphics than the Mach V's pair of GTX 690s, but top gaming results come from all of a system?s components working in concert, and the Core i7-3930K's larger amount of cache (12MB versus 8MB) and higher number of cores (six versus eight, or 12 versus eight when you factor in Hyper-Threading) simply let it deliver more punch.

There?s not a thing wrong with this Falcon Northwest Mach V, except that to get it you?ll be paying more than $5,000 for a system driven by what is, ultimately, a top-end midrange chip. For this reason, we're sticking with the Maingear Shift Super Stock as our Editors' Choice: Both it and this Mach V are comparable in many ways, but Maingear's system benefits from its top-tier CPU that gives you every benefit it has to bestow, and thus helps you out both when you're gaming and when you're not.

Samsung Galaxy Camera to Come with a Free 50GB Dropbox Account dropbox mini

Samsung?s new Galaxy Camera will be the first point-and-shoot to which you can add a 3G or 4G data plan when it arrives on store shelves in October. One of the major benefits of being connected to the Internet all the time is that the camera will be able to take full advantage of cloud-based services. Services like Dropbox.

Samsung confirmed today that customers who purchase a Galaxy camera will automatically receive a free 50GB Dropbox cloud storage account ? the same perk currently offered to some Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone buyers.

The camera is designed to be chummy with cloud storage services. It features an ?Auto Cloud Backup? feature that can beam your photos to Internet servers for safekeeping, the moment they?re created.

A pocket camera with Internet connectivity and cloud storage. Sound familiar? Yup? it?s just like Apple?s iPhone and iCloud, except the Galaxy Camera packs a more legitimate lens, a larger sensor, and 45GB more free storage space than Apple?s mobile photography offering.

Unlike iCloud, however, the free Dropbox plan isn?t a lifetime account. Dropbox will start asking you to fork over money (or drop the account) two years after your phone purchase.

It?ll be interesting to see whether the other major camera makers come up with similar cloud storage partnerships, since Android and Internet-connectivity are both major trends this year.

Homes from 'Rocky' and legendary sports movies

By Erika Riggs, Zillow

?Many sports movie scenes take place on a field, in a dugout, post game in a locker room or coach's office. But in between great plays and dramatic scores, many of the films feature shots of houses as well.

From the gritty house featured in "The Fighter" to the classic 1950s rambler in "The Sandlot," here's a real estate tour through sports films.

"Rocky"

YouTube

Usually near the top of any list of greatest sports films, "Rocky" garnered a devoted following, three Oscars and five sequels. Rocky Balboa's apartment in an urban Philadelphia building was an iconic part of the first film.

Google

Rocky's apartment still stands in Philly.

Located at 1818 E Tusculum St., Philadelphia,?seen above, the brick building showcased iconic scenes between the boxer and his girlfriend, Adrian, as well as his manager, Mickey. Built in 1920, the residence today is listed as a three-bedroom, one-bath condo measuring 754 square feet.

"The Sandlot"

Scotty Smalls, in the movie runs toward the house.

The classic children's film "The Sandlot" documents the summertime antics of a neighborhood's ragtag baseball team. Set in the 1960s, most of the 1993 film takes place in the empty lot where the boys play baseball, but one character's classic rambler home is briefly spotted.

Zillow

The home featured in "The Sandlot" looks much like it did in the '60s.

Built in 1956, the home at 1556 S 2000 E, Salt Lake City, pictured above, was last sold in 2009 in near original condition. Complete with green shag carpet, leaded-glass diamond-pane windows, beamed ceiling and brass light fixtures, the home looks just as it did 1960. The four-bedroom, three-bath Salt Lake City home sits on a quarter-acre lot and has 1,632 square feet of living space.

"A League of Their Own"

YouTube

Tom Hanks stands in front of the home in the movie "A League of Their Own."

Starring film heavyweights like Tom Hanks and Geena Davis, and featuring Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna, "A League of Their Own" showcased the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was established to keep baseball in the public's eye while men were overseas during World War II.

Zillow

The enormous Kentucky home served as a boarding house in the film "A League of Their Own."

Much of the film takes place on the field, but a large, Victorian-era home, above, gets its fair share of screen time toward the end of the movie as the setting for the boarding house. The Henderson, Ky., home was recently listed for sale in 2011 for $799,000. The listing was removed in May 2012. With nine fireplaces, three stories, full basement and five bedrooms, the house at 612 N Main St, Henderson?was more than roomy enough to host the movie's baseball team.

"The Fighter"

Zillow

Christian Bale, playing Dicky Eklund, walks toward the green home in the movie "The Fighter."

Like "Rocky," "The Fighter" was an Oscar-winning film that showcased an underdog boxer. Starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, the docudrama told the story of real-life boxer Micky Ward and his older half-brother Dicky Eklund.

Zillow

The home feature in "The Fighter" is still a bright shade of green.

Once a boxing contender himself, Eklund lives in the house shown above in Lowell, Mass. The home stands at 28 Smith St, Lowell?and is painted same green shade as it was in the film. The three-bedroom, one-bath home was built in 1900.

"Field of Dreams"

Source: Fox Pictures

A scene from "Field of Dreams."

The white, clapboard farmhouse and baseball field used in the much-loved 1989 movie "Field of Dreams" continues to attract upward of 60,000 visitors each year. So it comes as no surprise that new buyers of the "Field of Dreams" site are reportedly going to develop a portion of the 193-acre farm into "All-Star Ballpark Heaven," a 24-field baseball and softball tournament facility.

The clapboard farmhouse featured heavily in the film "Field of Dreams."

3 Daily Must-Dos to Prevent Osteoporosis Later in Life

You may feel young, vibrant, and strong now, but you don't want to be one of those women later in life whose bones are so weak that they lose three inches of height, or worse ? end fracturing a hip during a fall. Osteoporosis is no joke, and in order to prevent issues later in life, it's important to take care of bones now.

  1. Go for a run: Exercise is key to keeping bones strong; be sure to get at least 30 minutes a day. Weight-bearing workouts like going for a run, yoga, or strength training cause muscles to pull on the bones, which helps increase bone density.
  2. Cut back on cocktails and cola: Bone loss leads to osteoporosis, and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol or soda has been linked to an increased risk of the disease. Stick to one alcoholic drink a day, and limit cola intake, too.
  3. A glass of milk in the sun: Calcium is key to preventing bone loss, but vitamin D is necessary to help the body absorb the mineral. Dairy products, almonds, sardines, salmon, enriched cereals, orange juice, and dark-green veggies are great sources of calcium. Couple it with with five to 10 minutes of sun exposure three times a week, and your bones will thank you.

Video: Kids, teens brawl at skate park

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Numerous internet videos of fights show kids duking it out at a popular city park, a place designed to keep kids out of trouble. Now the city's Park and Recreation Department and Albuquerque Police say they are getting involved.

Fight videos from the Los Altos Skate Park near Lomas and Eubank have been posted to YouTube beginning last summer.

The latest was posted Monday, which shows young kids brawling with the older guys behind the camera encouraging the whole thing.

Some of the videos have received tens of thousands of views.

A spokesman for the Parks and Recreation Department said officials were not aware of the videos or the fighting but said they will take immediate action.

"We will work with APD to monitor any illegal or dangerous activity that is reported to us," said spokesman Paul Hyso. "In the case of Los Altos Skate Park, we have notified APD and requested additional patrols to prevent future incidents."

Hyso said APD officers will patrol the park every afternoon and evening to spot any dangerous activity.

Hyso also said employees at the nearby city sports office at Los Altos Park will also keep a close watch. Currently, city workers do not staff park sites.

Skate park regulars said violence has calmed down a bit but said fights are still inevitable.

"You're always going to run into confrontation and almost run into people here, but that's going to happen at any park you go to," said Skylar Petty.

The City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department operates six skate parks.

France opens murder inquiry into Arafat's death

PARIS (AP) ? French prosecutors opened a murder inquiry into the death of Yasser Arafat on Tuesday, his widow's lawyer said, after she and a TV investigation raised new questions about whether the Palestinian leader was poisoned.

Many in the Arab world have long suspected that Arafat was poisoned, and a Swiss lab's recent finding of elevated levels of polonium-210 ? a rare and highly lethal radioactive substance ? on Arafat's clothing has fed those claims.

However, the Institute of Radiation Physics said its findings were inconclusive and that only exhuming Arafat's remains could bring possible clarity. Palestinian officials have waffled on that matter ? initially approving the exhumation and then saying the matter needed more study ? only further fueling suspicions.

Arafat died in a French military hospital outside Paris in 2004 of what doctors have said was a massive stroke, but the Swiss lab's tests have renewed interest in his death. The findings were first broadcast by Arab satellite TV station Al-Jazeera, which approached the lab on behalf of Arafat's widow, Suha. She provided the lab with his clothing and other belongings.

After the results were released, Suha Arafat filed a complaint asking for a murder investigation. Her lawyer, Pierre-Olivier Sur, confirmed on Tuesday that the prosecutor's office in Nanterre, the seat of the district where the military hospital is, has agreed to take up the matter. Next, a judge will be appointed to lead the inquiry.

Sur said in a statement that his client would not comment because she wanted to let the judge do his work.

"This is a good step forward, any step aimed at revealing the truth about Yasser Arafat's death is good," said Abdallah Basher, who heads a Palestinian medical committee investigating Arafat's death.

He added that experts from the Swiss lab would travel to the West Bank in the next few weeks to take samples from Arafat's remains ? even though the matter of his exhumation is still in limbo. Arafat, who died at age 75, is buried in a mausoleum in the walled government compound where he spent the last three years of his life under Israeli siege.

Testing Arafat's bones for polonium-210 could offer the last chance to get to the bottom of Palestinian claims that their leader was poisoned, though some experts say it may already be too late for conclusive answers.

Scientists caution that polonium decays quickly and that an autopsy needs to be done quickly.

Although Palestinian officials have long accused Israel of being involved in Arafat's death, Israel has vehemently denied those charges.

"We heard about it in the media. It's not really our concern because the complaint is not lodged against Israel," said Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor. "If there is an investigation, we hope that it will shed light on this matter."

Suha Arafat's complaint does not name a responsible party, a common practice in France.

GOP Obstruction Halts Obama's Efforts

According to a new poll, nearly nine out of 10 Americans disapprove of the 112th Congress "? and for good reason. This is one of the least productive Congresses in history, reported USA TODAY "? even worse than the "do-nothing Congress" President Truman lambasted in 1948.

It doesn't have to work this way, even with a House controlled by Republicans and a White House and Senate controlled by Democrats. Recent history proves this point.

Parents: ParaNorman Introduces Children to Homosexuality

Spoiler Alert

When we lived in Philadelphia, one of my daughter?s acquaintances was being raised by two women in a lesbian relationship. My friend explained the girl had two mothers and ? essentially ? two fathers, due to the circumstances surrounding the insemination. It was a bit much for my kindergartner to properly process, so I didn?t address the issue with my daughter. After all, I wasn?t going to tell her that ?all families are the same? which was the message the public schools in Philadelphia were pushing. Instead my family?s Christian faith informs how we view sex, marriage, and parenthood, so I figured I?d answer questions only as they came up. At the time, I wasn?t ready to talk to her about heterosexual romance and definitely wasn?t ready to explain our position on homosexual relationships. ?

When we moved from Center City to Tennessee, we didn?t encounter similar family situations at Zion Christian Academy, a private Christian school near our house. This allowed us to discuss our beliefs about sex and marriage with the children when the kids were mature enough to understand it. We currently have three children ? a teenager, a pre-teen, and a 4 year old. We?ve had ?the talk? with the older two, but the pre-schooler is still asking probing questions about the etiquette of spitting and hair pulling at school. (Our family is anti-spitting and anti-hair pulling, we keep reminding her.)

However, parents who take children to the new movie ParaNorman might have to answer unwanted questions about sex.

ParaNorman centers around an 11-year-old outcast Norman who sees ghosts everywhere and must stop the dead from rising. (This is related to a witch?s curse put on his hometown hundreds of years ago, making him the only person to save his town.) Zombies, ghosts, witches? how can a parent go wrong?

There are reportedly two scenes parents need to know about. In one scene, the dad asks his son what he?s watching. Norman responds, ?sex and violence.? These irritating one-line remarks frequently pop up in kids? animated movies, a wink-wink from the producers to the invariably bored parents. Normally, kids don?t notice them and parents get a chuckle.

However, the second scene involves one of the subplots. Norman?s sister has a crush on a kid she tries desperately to impress throughout the movie. After she fails to turn his head, she finally asks him out.

?Sure,? he responds. ?You?re gonna love my boyfriend. He?s like a total chick-flick nut.?

My friend saw the film in a ?red state? and she reported that ?you could hear the gasps in the theatre from parents? at the unexpected line. ?I should have known something was up when the theatre manager made a huge disclaimer and offered refunds if we did not like the movie,? she wrote.

This line might not raise parental eyebrows in larger cities, but I thought I?d let parents know about this sexual orientation ?reveal? at the end in case you want to avoid these types of conversations in the car on the way home.

ParaNorman is rated PG for ?scary action and images, thematic elements, some rude humor and language.?

Scientists working an a nasal spray for treating depression and suicide

The Army is funding the research

The U.S. Army gave $3 million to the University of Indiana to develop an antidepressant that can be taken as a nasal spray. The grant could speed the development of a portable and easy-to-use device for preventing mental health problems.

One of the reasons depression and suicidal tendencies are so challenging to treat is that most medicines can't easily be delivered to the brain. Your brain is protected by the aptly named blood-brain barrier, which is specifically designed to keep any outside material from getting inside. While that's good in most situations, the barrier also keeps out medicines.

The nasal spray uses a nanoparticle delivery approach to send very tiny droplets of a drug called thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) into the body and across the blood-brain barrier. That way, the drug reaches the brain and dissolves slowly. TRH has demonstrated the potential to prevent suicide, depression, and bipolar disorder in other studies, but right now, a spinal tap is the only way to send it to the brain. If the researchers at the University of Indiana are successful, the delivery approach could lead to a new treatment that would be effective without being invasive. The technology could be applied to other diseases beyond mental illnesses, too.

Tragically, mental health problems are not uncommon in the military. The Army recently released data that showed suicides among soldiers have averaged one per day so far this year. It's an 18% increase from the same time period last year. And while there is a marked need and interest within the Army to bring those numbers down, a successful nasal spray could also be used by civilians.

Sony Alpha 57 (SLT-A57) | Product Reviews | TechReviewSource.com

Editor Rating: 3.50

By Jim Fisher

The Sony Alpha 57 ($699.99 direct, body only) is one of four APS-C D-SLR cameras in Sony's current lineup. It's one step up from the entry-level Alpha 37, and like its siblings sports a fixed mirror design and an electronic viewfinder, a departure from classic SLR cameras that use a moving mirror and optical viewfinder for through-the-lens viewing. The 16-megapixel A57 is capable of producing some excellent images and delivers a superlative video recording experience, but its EVF is just not as good as the next model up in the Sony line, the Alpha 65, and the camera is a little slow to start and fire a shot. Nikon's more traditional D5100 remains our Editors' Choice for D-SLRs priced under $1,000.

Design and Features
At 3.9 by 5.25 by 3.25 inches and 1.4 pounds, the Alpha 57 is only slightly larger than the Nikon D3200, which measures 3.8 by 5 by 3.1 inches, but is lighter at one pound. Its sharp 3-inch 921k-dot rear LCD is hinged so you can view it from the side, the top, or slightly above your head. It's also possible to disable the screen by facing it toward the camera, which is handy if you prefer to use the eye-level finder. By default the camera automatically toggles between the EVF and the rear LCD as you place the camera to your eye or pull it away, but you can disable this functionality and opt to use the physical Finder/LCD button to switch between the two.

The viewfinder is one of the most important ergonomic components of any SLR, and the Alpha 57's is a bit lacking. Even though its 1.4-megapixel resolution sounds impressive, it's not nearly as sharp and lacks contrast when compared with the 2.5-megapixel OLED EVF found in Sony's Alpha 65, Alpha 77, and Alpha NEX-7 cameras. If you're shooting in low light, the typically fluid finder suffers from laggy, stuttering motion.

Sony clearly put some thought into the Alpha 57's control layout. The camera has a mode dial on its top left side, a front control dial, and Exposure Compensation and ISO buttons on the top of the grip, directly behind the shutter and On/Off switch. The rear of the camera features buttons to control the Drive mode, White Balance, and Exposure Lock, and to start Movie recording. An overlay menu, which gives you access to the rest of the shooting controls, is launched by pressing the Function button. There's no rear control dial, which makes it challenging for shooters who are used to a dual-dial camera like the Pentax K-30. Having a second dial available makes it easier to shoot in Manual mode, and to more quickly adjust a second shooting setting when using the camera in Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority mode.

Performance and Conclusions
The last few Sony SLRs that we've tested have been speed demons. In terms of shot-to-shot time, the Alpha 57 fits that mold?it can capture a burst of 28 JPG or 22 Raw photos at a speedy 7.8 frames per second and records a shutter lag of less than 0.1 second. There's also a 12 fps mode, accessible via the mode dial, that shoots 8-megapixel JPG photos with a 1.4x digital crop. It's a good option for sports and wildlife, as it can capture a burst of 25 shots before slowing, although our tests showed that it's a bit shy of 12 frames per second?we clocked it at 11.2 fps.

Autofocus speed is quite good?it's nearly instantaneous in good light. In very dim light it can take a anywhere from 1.4 to 2.5 seconds to lock on to a subject and fire, regardless of whether you use the LCD or EVF for framing. Where the camera suffers is in its boot-and-shoot time. The A57 requires 2.7 seconds to start up and take a shot, which is downright slow for an SLR. The Pentax K-30 starts and shoots in 1.3 seconds, records 0.1-second of shutter lag, and manages to rattle off shots at a respectable 5.2 seconds. The K-30's autofocus is quick in good light as well if you use the optical finder, but slows to 0.8-second in Live View mode. In dim light it takes about 2 seconds using the viewfinder and a sluggish 4 seconds in Live View mode.

The camera is available as a body only, but can also be purchased in two kits?the lesser priced (about $800) is the SLT-A57K. This includes Sony's standard DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens. That lens isn't a great performer, according to our test suite, Imatest. Its sharpness rating is 1,597 lines per picture height at its widest, 1,505 lines at 35mm, and 1,589 lines at 55mm?all shy of the 1,800 lines required for a sharp image?and it exhibits 3.5 percent barrel distortion at its widest setting. The 18-55mm lens sells for $220 on its own, but even at the lower bundled price, it's still unimpressive.

The second kit is the SLT-A57M. It sells for around $1,000, but the extra cash gets you a much better kit lens?it's bundled with the 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens. It shows a bit more distortion than the standard lens?4.5 percent at 18mm?but is noticeably sharper at all but its longest setting. At its widest it records 1,732 lines, increases to 1,904 at 50mm, but softens to 1,475 lines at 135mm.

Imatest also checks for noise, which can rob photos of detail when the camera's sensitivity to light, measured in ISO, is increased. The Alpha 57 keeps noise under the 1.5-percent noise threshold through ISO 3200, which will let you shoot in dim light with ease. More impressive is that there is very little evidence of detail loss at this setting. At ISO 6400 noise hits 1.6 percent, but detail loss is more noticeable, especially in JPG images?Raw files retain more detail at this setting, but are noticeably grainier. Our Editors' Choice Nikon D5100 does a slightly better job with noise, it keeps files clean through ISO 6400.

Video is recorded in AVCHD format, in your choice of 1080p60, 1080i60, or 1080p24 resolutions. Unlike traditional D-SLRs, which rely on slower contrast detect autofocus for video, the Alpha 57 always use phase detect focus. This allows the camera to adjust focus very quickly, allowing you to concentrate on framing when recording footage. The overall quality of the video is excellent?details are crisp, motion is smooth, and colors are accurate. You can hear the sound of the lens focusing during recording when using the built-in mic, but there is a standard 1/8-inch mic jack if you need better audio quality. There's also a mini HDMI output, mini USB port, remote control port, and a DC power input connector. Sony still uses the proprietary Minolta hot shoe, so you'll have to get an adapter in order to use standard shoe-mount accessories. In addition to SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards, Sony's Memory Stick Duo media is supported.

Even if you've already bought into the Sony system, the Alpha 57 is a bit of a tough sell. It's more expensive than the entry-level Alpha 37, and aside from a few extra physical controls, is quite similar. If you're a more advanced Sony shooter, you'll likely be drawn to the Alpha 65 or Alpha 77, each of which feature more controls, GPS, and a superior OLED viewfinder. Even though the A57 is capable of capturing some excellent photos in varying light, its EVF is just not good enough to change the mind of traditional shooters who prefer an optical viewfinder. If that's the case, you'll be better served with a camera like the Pentax K-30, which has a best-in-class pentaprism finder.

Nook headed for UK as Barnes & Noble goes international, dabbles in the Queen's English

Nook

Well, our English friends, today is a good day. Your choice in e-readers is about to get that much better as Barnes & Noble has decided to make your homeland the first stop on its highly-anticipated international tour. The Nook and its associated store will be making their big debut in the UK this October, though how exactly the prices will translate to British Pounds remains to be seen. At first, only the Nook Simple Touch and its Glow Light-equipped sibling will be available through the storefront, but we imagine it won't be long before the company's line of Android tablets make their own splash in the land of tea and James Bond. The e-book store will be launching with a rather respectable catalog of over 2.5 million titles, which should give the new comer a nice running start. You'll find PR after the break, but sadly it's a bit light on finer details. Don't worry, though, we'll be back with more info as we get it.

Biden Likens Republicans to 'Squealing Pigs'

MINNEAPOLIS - Vice President Joe Biden suggested a new image to associate with Republicans who opposed Democratic efforts to toughen regulations on Wall Street, characterizing them as " squealing pigs."

"Over the objections where they sound like squealing pigs, over the objections of Romney and all his allies, we passed some of the toughest Wall Street regulations in history, turning Wall Street back into the allocator of capital it always has been and no longer a casino. And they want to repeal it," Biden said at an event in Minneapolis.

Biden, who is in Minnesota for two events Tuesday followed by a stop in Detroit Wednesday, is on his first campaign swing since last week's controversial "chains" comment. In Minneapolis, Biden rallied a crowd of over 1,500, according to campaign officials, trying to draw a contrast between the future he and President Obama offer and that which the Mitt Romney-Paul Ryan ticket has put forth.

"I've never run across a presidential candidate who's a decent guy but more out of touch than Mr. Romney is right now," Biden said.

Biden, who said he's "so damn proud to be vice president with President Barack Obama," touted the efforts of the Obama administration to improve access to healthcare and education and boost the status of the middle class.

"Folks, the middle class is coming back. They have been ravaged. They have been ravaged. But they're starting to come back," Biden said. "We've helped them keep their homes and their health care, keep their child in college, protect them from predatory lending to make sure the big banks don't threaten the economy with those risky financial schemes of credit default swaps, collateral debt obligations and all this other funny stuff that brought the economy down."

Biden, who spent much of his career in the Senate traveling on Amtrak between Washington, D.C. and his home in Delaware, joked with the crowd about how comfortable he felt speaking to them in an old train depot.

"I'm more at home in a train depot than anywhere else," Biden said. "Being in a train depot is where I, kind of where I lived most of my life."

(AP) ? The most high-tech rover NASA has ever designed was speeding toward Mars on Sunday to attempt an acrobatic landing on the planet's surface.

The Curiosity rover was poised to hit the top of the Martian atmosphere at 13,000 mph. If all goes according to script, it will be slowly lowered into a massive crater by cables in the final few seconds.

With Curiosity on autopilot, engineers became spectators, anxiously waiting to see if Curiosity executes the routine as planned.

"I'm not the nervous type, but I haven't been sleeping all that well the last week or so even though I'm still very confident," said engineer Steven Lee.

NASA was ready for the "Super Bowl of planetary exploration," said Doug McCuistion, head of the Mars exploration program at NASA headquarters.

"We score and win or we don't score and we don't win," said McCuistion.

Like football's Super Bowl, there were celebrities on hand. More than a dozen were invited to watch the landing at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, including will.i.am, Wil Wheaton, Seth Green, Morgan Freeman and Alex Trebek.

If all goes well, mission control at the JPL should hear a signal at 10:31 p.m. PDT. The space agency warned that confirmation could take longer if an orbiting spacecraft that's supposed to listen for Curiosity during the descent is not in the right place.

Curiosity's trajectory was so accurate that engineers decided to wave off a last chance to tweak its position before atmosphere entry.

"We're ready to head in," said mission manager Brian Portock.

Not ones to tempt fate, flight controllers planned to break out the "good luck" peanuts before Curiosity takes the plunge as part of a long-running tradition.

"It's definitely the quiet before the storm," said NASA sciences chief John Grunsfeld. "There's tremendous anticipation."

One scientist who can relate to the building anxiety is Cornell University planetary scientist Steve Squyres, who headed NASA's last successful rover mission in 2004.

This time around, Squyres has a supporting role and planned to view the landing with other researchers in the "science bullpen."

"Landing on Mars is always a nerve-racking thing. You're never going to get relaxed about something like landing a spacecraft on Mars," said Squyres.

Sunday's touchdown attempt was especially intense because NASA is testing a brand new landing technique. Due to the communication delay between Mars and Earth, Curiosity will be on autopilot. There's also extra pressure because budget woes have forced NASA to rejigger its Mars exploration roadmap.

"There's nothing in the pipeline" beyond the planned launch of a Mars orbiter in 2013, said former NASA Mars czar Scott Hubbard, who teaches at Stanford University.

Curiosity was launched to study whether the Martian environment ever had conditions suitable for microbial life.

The voyage to Mars took over eight months and spanned 352 million miles. The trickiest part of the journey? The landing. Because Curiosity weighs nearly a ton, engineers drummed up a new and more controlled way to set the rover down.

The last Mars rovers, twins Spirit and Opportunity, were cocooned in air bags and bounced to a stop in 2004.

The plans for Curiosity called for a series of braking tricks, similar to those used by the space shuttle, and a supersonic parachute to slow it down. Next: Ditch the heat shield used for the fiery descent.

And in a new twist, engineers came up with a way to lower the rover by cable from a hovering rocket-powered backpack. At touchdown, the cords cut and the rocket stage crashes a distance away.

The nuclear-powered Curiosity, the size of a small car, is packed with scientific tools, cameras and a weather station. It sports a robotic arm with a power drill, a laser that can zap distant rocks, a chemistry lab to sniff for the chemical building blocks of life and a detector to measure dangerous radiation on the surface.

It also tracked radiation levels during the journey to help NASA better understand the risks astronauts could face on a future manned trip.

After several weeks of health checkups, the six-wheeled rover could take its first short drive and flex its robotic arm.

The landing site near Mars' equator was picked because there are signs of water everywhere, meeting one of the requirements for life as we know it. Inside Gale Crater is a 3-mile-high mountain, and images from space show the base appears rich in minerals that formed in the presence of water.

Previous trips to Mars have uncovered ice near the Martian north pole and evidence that water once flowed when the planet was wetter and toastier unlike today's harsh, frigid desert environment.

Curiosity's goal: To scour for basic ingredients essential for life, including carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur and oxygen. It's not equipped to search for living or fossil microorganisms. To get a definitive answer, a future mission needs to fly Martian rocks and soil back to Earth to be examined by powerful laboratories.

The mission comes as NASA retools its Mars exploration strategy. Faced with tough economic times, the space agency pulled out of partnership with the European Space Agency to land a rock-collecting rover in 2018. The Europeans have since teamed with the Russians as NASA decides on a new roadmap.

Despite Mars' reputation as a spacecraft graveyard, humans continue their love affair with the planet, lobbing spacecraft in search of clues about its early history. Out of more than three dozen attempts ? flybys, orbiters and landings ? by the U.S., Soviet Union, Europe and Japan since the 1960s, more than half have ended disastrously.

One NASA rover that defied expectations is Opportunity, which is still busy wheeling around the rim of a crater in the Martian southern hemisphere eight years later.

Indian activist Hazare to end hunger strike

Indian anti-graft activist Anna Hazare was set to end his "indefinite" hunger strike Friday after six days, having failed to garner the mass support that spurred his anti-corruption drive a year ago.

Hazare, 75, announced his intention to end his fast when he addressed supporters Thursday at the protest venue in central New Delhi, where he begun refusing food last Sunday.

His remarks also hinted at a possible entry into politics with an eye on India's 2014 general elections.

"It is another two years to go to the polls. We have to go to people throughout the country in the next one-and-half years. Why waste time on fasts?" Hazare said.

The veteran activist's latest protest -- which he had threatened to pursue "until death" -- had sought to pressurise the government into strengthening a new anti-corruption bill currently pending a parliamentary committee hearing.

His campaign had also demanded a special probe into possible graft allegations against 15 ministers, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Hazare became an unlikely national hero last August when he led countrywide protests that tapped into a rich seam of public anger at India's endemic corruption and caught Singh's graft-tainted coalition government unawares.

During a 12-day hunger strike, he was feted as a latter-day Mahatma Gandhi and mobbed at a triumphal procession through the capital New Delhi.

This time however, crowds have been far smaller and it quickly became clear that the campaign had lost much of its momentum since the heady days of last summer.

The media has also been less supportive, suggesting that Hazare overstepped the mark in insisting that parliament adopts his campaign's input for the new anti-corruption bill.

"We want a political alternative," Hazare said Thursday. "People should decide who should be given tickets and how to achieve that alternative system."

Campaign spokeswoman Aswathi Murlidharan said Friday that no decision had yet been taken on what political avenues would be explored.

"It is not a political party that we are looking at right now," she told AFP.

Hazare was due to end his fast at 5:00 pm (1130 GMT) Friday.

Importance of using a Dedicated Hosting Service | Part 2 | Official ...

As seen in the previous article, almost all the companies, barring a very few exceptions, require such high-end equipment, network, experts, dedicated space, other advanced web features, and full-time uptime connectivity, but they cannot build such a data center within their own premises.

All these features, equipments, and fully advanced web technology is used in a dedicated data center, where highly-skilled web technicians work round the clock to bring the world into your drawing rooms through the internet, and at a very affordable cost too! The company, by using these dedicated servers and data centers save a lot of costs and can use the savings for their other equally important requirements.

Hence, the company thus chooses the best and experienced hosting service and rents its dedicated hosting services, including dedicated web server or servers. By doing this, the company actually saves a lot of funds which would have needed to develop their own in-house fully dedicated data center.

For using just a fraction of that huge investment required to maintain a professional website ?in the house? (a dedicated data center located inside the company?s premises), the company, needs to rent top-of-the-line advanced web servers and construct a dedicated web hosting set up that is exactly suited to its requirements.

Other important issues like skilled manpower, installation of robust web technology, take care of security, data storage, and a data center are needed. The company then needs to monitor the entire data center 24 hours a day, every day.

For all these advanced web capabilities, the company will need a huge IT-related budget which can be well avoided by simply hiring or renting a competent dedicated web hosting service!

But now, after hiring the services of a competent and professional dedicated server hosting services,? the company has everything it needs to publish a very secure, robust, professional-quality website, supported by very capable support staff to look after their website for any issues that may occur.

The company may also acquire more important dedicated hosting-related services from the dedicated web hosting company so that all these advanced web features, and the monitoring and maintenance of its professional-quality website are fortified.

It is not just any company, (small-, medium-, or large-company), that can use the dedicated servers and the dedicated hosting services, but even individuals, artists, busy and popular websites can utilize those excellent services for huge storage capability, in-house IT related tasks, intranet functionality, and internet-related (web) functionality, and of course to maintain and run their websites and conduct their global business 24 x 7 x 365, i.e., without stoppages (down times and connectivity-related issues) and major web-related issues like security concerns.

Due to the robustness, the cutting-edge technology used in making these dedicated web servers, and the constantly upgrading with newer technology, the dedicated web servers are second to none in its importance in the web hosting world.

Also, due to the additional high-security features and the other powerful capabilities it offers to the businesses and their websites, these dedicated web servers that are housed in secure and well-managed data centers, and monitored and maintained by the professional-quality dedicated hosting services can be considered vitally important to conduct almost any professional online business.

(AP) ? Virginia is for lovers ? and thousands of purple martins.

They begin flitting into town in early June, and by midsummer the purple martins that roost in a one-block section of downtown Richmond are so thick, their synchronized mass movements can be seen on weather radar.

Once scorned for their mess, the purple martins that check in each night in a row of pear trees are now celebrated with their own festival. "Gone to the Birds," now in its fifth year, will be held Saturday as bartenders serve up "Purple Martinis," restaurants offer discounts and guides take birders on tours of this urban aviary.

It's a mystery why the blackish-purple birds, the largest of the swallow family in North America, selected a row of 15 Bradford pear trees to spend their last six summers in a crowded entertainment district known for its restaurants, clubs and former tobacco warehouses converted into lofts.

Most people don't care and just enjoy the show, which includes raptors sweeping down from high-rises to snatch a purple martin in flight. There are plenty to go around: organizers said they counted 27,000 birds at the 2011 festival; 14,000 have been counted this year.

The most spectacular show is at dusk when the birds circle the skies, tightening into a ball to return to their roost in waves.

"Who would think standing around watching birds would be something cool to do?" said Jon Baliles, who helped organize the first festival with his brother-in-law.

"We were like, wow, it's totally surreal, right in the middle of the city," Baliles said. "I'm no bird aficionado but that remains one of the coolest things I've ever seen in Richmond."

The festival is supposed to help businesses in a section of downtown called Shockoe Bottom, once the center of Richmond's slave-trading commerce. The low-lying area is still recovering from floods brought by Hurricane Gaston in 2004.

Purple martins, like other migratory birds, often roost in a staging area before they begin their flight south, which for the martins is South America. They gorge on beetles, increasing their body weight by 30 to 60 percent, to fuel their 5,000-mile journey.

"They're associated with eating insects, so people love having them around, and they're purple," said Mary Elfner with the Virginia Audubon.

But why pit stop in Richmond?

Louis Verner, a biologist with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, said the dense leaf cover and twig structure can support thousands of birds in one tree and the James River is less than a half mile away.

Mike Wilson, a biologist with the Center for Conservation Biology, said Richmond is not the only urban setting for the birds.

"What these birds do is they're relying on these routes for safety in numbers," he said. Martins are gregarious, he said, and they form big flocks.

Dilnesaw Bitew wasn't a fan of the birds at first because of the mess they left on the cars at his Addis Ethiopian Restaurant. Now he offers 20 percent discounts while the birds are in town.

"Now I like them. It's fun to watch them in the evening," he said.

Adolph White, a retired teacher and amateur birder, is out every morning to wash down the sidewalk that runs along the row of pear trees. He was there Wednesday with his grandson.

"It's covered up pretty bad," White said of the layer of droppings.

His night job is much better. He's a guide several nights a week for people who want to see the purple martins return at dusk to their pear trees.

"They are amazed," he said.
